SunStorageLehen is a Flagship project targeting the yet unsolved storage of fluctuating renewable energy (mainly sun and wind power). Increasing fractions of renewables cause problems in balancing the electric power grid, surplus in production has to be cut off by storing energy. The solution is to store electric energy in a chemical form (energy-rich gas) in porous subsurface reservoirs. Thus, this research project provides a centerpiece of the "Power to Gas" strategy.
